The greatest protection against COVID-19 is only achieved after the second vaccination. But a study Now showing just how important the first injection is: it reduces the risk of developing Sars-CoV-2 by 80 percent. Thus the lethal outcome of the infection appears practically impossible.
According to a study from Italy, the number of infections among people who have been vaccinated against the Coronavirus drops dramatically within five weeks after the first dose. The National Institute of Health discovered that in this group, significantly fewer infections occurred 35 days after the first vaccination with a Pfizer / Biontech, Moderna, or Astrazeneca vaccine. The number of hospital admissions is decreasing further, as is the number of deaths. This applies to all age groups, men and women.
“35 days after the first dose, the number of infections decreases by 80 percent, the hospital stay rate decreases by 90 percent, and the number of deaths decreases by 95 percent.”Italian Health Authority said. “These data confirm the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign and the need to quickly achieve high coverage for the entire population to end the state of emergency.”Said Silvio Prosavero, president of the institute.
Scientists, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, examined the data of 13.7 million people who were vaccinated in Italy. 95 percent of those who received Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna completed the vaccination course during the study. None of those who received Astrazeneca actually received a second dose. So far Italy followed the manufacturer’s recommendations and accordingly gave a second dose of Biontech / Pfizer three weeks after the first dose, a second dose of Moderna four weeks later and a second dose of Astrazeneca after 12 weeks.
It is the first study of its kind conducted by a European Union country on the true impact of its vaccination campaign. The investigation of the data began with the start of the Italian vaccination campaign on December 27, 2020 and continued until May 3, 2021.
