Is abortion over in the United States? This is what happens

There is a lot going on in the United States regarding abortion law. The Supreme Court would like to overturn Roe v. Wade. The short explanation for this is that different countries can then decide for themselves whether or not to allow abortion. In some republican states, the decision is clear: they don’t want to allow it any longer, or make it too difficult.

Yesterday’s political news site Politico The full draft of the US Supreme Court’s opinion on abortion is available on the website. According to Chief Justice John Roberts, this draft is real but not final. Therefore, this change will not be implemented immediately. In essence, it concerns the abolition of the right to abortion.

There is probably no right to abortion in the United States

Roberts ordered an investigation into the leak, US media reported. He spoke of a “betrayal” of the court’s secrecy aimed at “undermining the integrity of our operations”. “It won’t affect the work of the court in any way,” Roberts said of the incident, which “has never been heard before” but that this wouldn’t work.

The leaked document yesterday shows that the majority of chief justices (nine in total) want to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. This comes half a century after the court itself made it possible. It happened in the so-called Rue vs. Wade rule. However, conservative justices now have a clear majority on the court. Some of them were nominated by former Republican President Donald Trump.

Democratic President Joe Biden has already announced that he will oppose the court’s decision. He describes a woman’s freedom of choice as “essential” and “part of personal freedom”.

Raw vs. Wade

If Roe vs Wade is dropped, US states will once again be able to decide for themselves whether to allow abortion. Many “republican” countries already prohibit or severely restrict this right.

What she believes is at stake, Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement: “Roe v. Wade ensures a woman’s right to choose an abortion. Essentially, it also protects the fundamental right to privacy. It is clear that opponents want to punish women and deny them the right to make decisions about their own bodies.” Now is the time to fight for women and for our country with all we have.”
