Indian well collapse: 35 dead | outside

At least 35 people were killed and 16 injured when the cover of a water well accessible via steps collapsed in the town of Indore, a local government official said on Friday. Eighteen people were saved.

Local authorities said the incident occurred as devotees gathered at a temple on Thursday to celebrate the Hindu festival of Rama Navami. According to the Hindustan Times, it was an ancient well that was covered with stone slabs by the locals three years ago. When people sat on the boards on Thursday, the lid collapsed.

At least 75 military and rescue personnel worked throughout the day to clear the rubble, using ropes and ladders to pull people who had fallen into the well, local media reported.
