Iga Swiatek beats former winner to US Open third round | sports

Iga Swiatek had no problems against American Sloane Stephens in the second round of the US Open. #1 in the world was too strong for the 2017 winner with 6-3, 6-2.

The 21-year-old Swiatek finished it off after an hour and thirteen minutes with four good first services in a row, which Stephens didn’t have an answer to every time. Stephens (29) is number 51 in the world and therefore does not have a protected status.

For Swiatek, it was her first-ever match at Arthur Ashe Court, the world’s largest tennis court. I remember sitting up high in the stands at Serena Williams matches. “To be here downstairs now is great,” Swiatek said after reaching the third round. “I’m really happy with my focus today and I was very strong from start to finish.”

In the third round, Swiatek will face American 105th-ranked Lauren Davis.

Badusa exit

Fourth seed Paula Padusa could not avoid disqualification. The Spaniards had to recognize its chief in three groups in the Croatian Petra Martic. She became 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2 for number 54 in the world in 2 hours 6 minutes.

The 24-year-old New York-born Padusa has not made it past the fourth round at any of the major tournaments this year. Last year, she reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, her best result in a Grand Slam tournament.
