H&M will soon ask for the costs of returning packages

Many clothing stores, such as H&M, have begun an experiment where they charged consumers for return of packages. At the moment, this is still happening specifically in the UK and Norway, but if it turns out to be successful, it will soon also be applied to our country. Other stores, such as Zara, have recently begun to experiment with return costs.

So far, stores have paid returns, around €12.50 per returned box.

I recently started spending money at Zara clothing store to repack your clothes. At least, if you live in the UK, Belgium or the Netherlands. However, the reason has nothing to do with durability. Returning packages is harmful to the environment, but surprisingly, this is not the motivation for companies to ask for money. Both H&M and Zara point out that it’s about inflation.

“We are now testing the change,” said Helena Helmerson, CEO of H&M. “Whether we continue with this has to do with the reaction of our customers.” The companies also say that the increased costs of materials and parcel dispatch and the fact that people are buying less due to the financial crisis has affected their return costs decision.

Five euros makes the difference

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, which is responsible for the transition to a circular economy, commissioned a study last year. How do consumers respond to interventions to reduce the amount of returns? The ministry is concerned about the volume of revenue.

Customers begin to think more carefully about their order amount if they have to pay five euros or more to get it back, according to search. People who object to return costs also say to order somewhere else if they have to pay for returns or just visit physical stores.
