‘Grease’ star Olivia Newton-John dies at 73

“For thirty years, Olivia has been a symbol of triumph and hope, sharing her experiences with breast cancer,” Easterling says. Newton-John is said to have “passed away peacefully on her ranch in Southern California Monday morning, surrounded by family and friends.”

Newton-John is best known for the 1978 musical Grease, in which she played Sandy alongside John Travolta.


The actress and singer has suffered from breast cancer for years. She was declared cured twice, but five years ago the disease returned and she developed metastases in the lower back.

Newton-John also had a hit with “Xanadu”, the theme song for the 1980 movie of the same name, and “Physical” from 1981.

She was born in Great Britain but moved with her family to Australia when she was five years old. In the 1960s, Newton-John returned to the UK, and in 1974 she played for his country at the Eurovision Song Contest. Shortly thereafter I moved to the United States.
