Discman is back with this modern successor.
This new portable CD player brings back the good old days of the Sony Discman, but with a modern twist. That means you don’t need AA batteries and you can also listen wirelessly via Bluetooth.
If you’re of a certain age, you’ll probably still have shelves and binders full of CDs in your home. Most people have them collecting dust, although there are plenty of hi-fi enthusiasts who still regularly put a CD through their sleeve. Just like with vinyl, there are also avid CD collectors. And believe it or not, some older albums are still not available on Spotify (e.g. Chill Out by The KLF).
Chinese manufacturer FiiO It released a new portable cassette player earlier this year as a follow-up to the Sony Walkman. This time around, the brand is breathing new life into another popular gadget by introducing a modern version of the CD playerThe Discman, a portable CD player introduced by Sony in 1984. The Discman was very popular until MP3 players such as the iPod were introduced.
If you want to listen to an old record on the go, you can now buy a new portable CD player for that purpose. The FiiO DM13 has USB-C and Bluetooth, so you can listen to it with wireless headphones or earbuds. The Bluetooth connection supports AptX, AptX HD, AptX Low Latency, and SBC codecs. Of course, the DM13 also has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and a 4.4mm balanced port for hi-fi headphones. The portable CD player has a battery life of up to eight hours.
You can also connect the DM13 to a stereo system via analog, SPDIF and USB connections. When connected to a USB power source, you can put the CD player in desktop mode so it doesn’t use the rechargeable battery.
One new feature that was also present in Discman and similar portable CD players last year: electronic shock protection. Music is buffered to prevent it from skipping when you’re touring with the DM13.
The Fiio DM13 is available in silver, red, blue, black and titanium and will be available for sale from September for €179.
