Central America’s most active volcano erupts | Abroad

The Fuego volcano erupted in Guatemala. This volcano is very active in Central America.

There is talk of “pyroclastic flows”. This combination of gas, steam and debris causes ash to fall over seven nearby villages.

The Coordinating for Disaster Relief said the eruption began early Thursday morning. The situation will only get worse.

35 kilometers from the capital

The volcano – at an altitude of 3,763 meters – is 35 kilometers from the capital, Guatemala City. The last outbreak in December 2022 forced the closure of the international airport. Traffic is no longer possible on the busy road between the tourist city of Antigua Guatemala and the southern part of the country.

On June 3, 2018, a cloud of fire from the volcano buried the village of San Miguel Los Lodes. 215 dead and many missing.

Two other volcanoes are active in Guatemala: Santiago (in the west of the country) and Pacaya (in the south).
