Truss submitted her resignation to King Charles. She will remain UK Prime Minister until a successor is elected.
In her speech, Truss said that she had agreed with Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee, that an election for a new leadership within the party would follow within a week. The country may have a new prime minister this month. After the resignation of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, it took about two months for Truss to be elected by party members.
never back down
The resignation is still a surprise, says reporter Anne Senen. “We knew the position of Liz Truss was hanging in the balance last week. Her authority was very weak. She had recently reversed her economic plans. Combined with the appointment of a new Treasury Secretary, that should have given her some breathing room.”
Obviously, this did not happen. After a vote in parliament – on shale gas exploration – last night the situation has become unsustainable. “Today everything has moved to new equipment,” says Sanin. “More and more MPs have spoken out against Truss’ premiership. There has been no turning back.”
Prime Minister Mark Root finds it “of course very upsetting” to Truss that she has announced her departure. Two weeks ago he praised her at length. “We agreed on a lot of points,” Root says of Truss. We “talked for a bit longer” at a summit in Prague in early October and “I thought it was a really good conversation”.
Rota is “looking forward to working with who will now be my colleague again” in the UK. This will be the fifth, I think.
Truss took over as Prime Minister of England only a month and a half ago:
Truss reached the decision to resign after speaking to senior figures in the Conservative Party at her official residence. She will discuss the growing pressure within her own party with Brady, party chairman Jake Perry and Deputy Prime Minister Therese Coffey. Truss’ popularity and that of the party declined in her short time as prime minister, largely due to her faltering economic policies. Seventeen party members said publicly this week that Truss should resign.
Opposition Leader Keir Starmer finds it unacceptable that the Conservative Party can now choose its own new leader and is calling for new elections to be held immediately. His Labor Party is leading in opinion polls. If it were up to the conservatives, this election wouldn’t be until 2024.
