PARIS (ANP/RTR) – Basketball player LeBron James carries the American flag on Friday during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris. The 39-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist was chosen in a vote among American Olympians.
“It is an incredible honor to represent the United States on this world stage, especially at a time when the world can come together,” said James, who is competing in his fourth Games.
“As a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything not just to me, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, other Olympians, and so many people across the country who have big ambitions in sports,” said the Los Angeles Lakers basketball player. “We have to bring it all together and I am proud to be a part of this important moment.”
The U.S. flag bearer will be announced Tuesday. Handballer Louis Abing and 3×3 basketball player Worthy de Jong will carry the Dutch flags. The opening ceremony begins around the River Seine in Paris on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
