Art teachers from all educational networks have gathered in the Constitutional Court to challenge new achievement goals. They have an exaggerated focus on science and think they are endangering the arts.

In September 2021, a year ago, Flemish art teachers sounded the alarm to express their concern about the new achievement targets for the second and third cycles of secondary education. According to them, there is plenty of room for science and technology in these attainment goals. Lessons about art and culture are scaled back. There is a great deal of concern about this, especially in the field of art education. Teachers in those schools fear that more math and science will discourage or even bring down their students. It appears that “our students deliberately chose those artistic subjects because they derive their motivation from them.” That is why they started proceedings in the Constitutional Court. They hope to destroy the unfavorable achievement goals of their students. More or less technical topics in the timelines? We asked a math music teacher, artist, and art student. “In a few months I will graduate as a teacher of aesthetic education. But now that the space for art subjects in the new curriculum is less and less, I wonder if there is still room within the school walls for people like me. Fortunately, with my diploma I can also apply for a job in museums or cultural centers. But I prefer teaching. People who develop curricula often underestimate the importance of technical topics for youth development. As a human being, you need more than a book or a movie to broaden your horizons. Through the aesthetics of lessons or drawing, you put students in touch with things that – in these digital times – are no longer so obvious. Many students see it as an ordinary lesson. But for some, it could be the beginning of a lifelong passion. I understand that people want to focus more on the exact sciences. One thing you should not forget: a difficult calculation can always be done by a computer. But we will always need someone to paint a painting, drawing or picture full of passion and creativity. Of course, technical subjects are no less important than mathematics, physics or chemistry. Not many people will believe it, but art is purely a science. Just think of sound waves in music or refraction of light in photography. This is also why I sometimes use a sound wave during my math class to explain something. And during music lessons, I use a mathematical equation regularly, for example to calculate the chance of hearing damage. “It is a pity that there is less space in the new lesson schedules for art subjects. Because although plastic education or aesthetics or music require study, there is a completely different atmosphere during those subjects than during the mathematics lesson. And that is normal. When you are Creatively, you speak to other parts of your brain. So music or drawing lessons are very important – during a full day of lessons – to allow students to relax for a while.During my teenage years, art school topics didn’t make much of an impression on me.The stories especially inspired me found in history and geography classes. After my graphic studies I went to travel. The artists I met all over the world gave me insights that you can’t learn in school. Not only about technology, but also in my search for inspiration.Art materials should not be valued like classics. This It kills freedom of expression. Thus also for creativity. The majority of students will do anything to succeed and graduate as quickly as possible. And there pinch the shoe. As an artist, you have to dare to do things that go against the imposed rules: question rules and methods. b and revolt against the opinion of the school or teacher. But this situation is not tolerated in the current education system.
