American midfielder Bassett from Feyenoord to Fortuna
American midfielder Cole Bassett is moving from Feyenoord to Fortuna Sittard. The 21-year-old international from Team USA will play soccer on a rental basis in Limburg this season. Bassett came to Feyenoord in January, renting him for a year and a half from American club Colorado Rapids, with an option to buy. But in Rotterdam, he had to make do with only a few raids.
Fortuna Sittard had been chasing Bassett for a while. Coach Sjors Ultee wanted to bring in the American to succeed Zian Flemming, who turned out for English club Millwall. Feyenoord, Colorado Rapids and Fortuna Sittard reached an agreement.
“I’m happy to play in the Eredivisie next season,” said Bassett, who played seven times as a substitute for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie last season. “It’s a great opportunity to spend minutes in the yellow-green game Fortuna Sittard.” At the start of the competition, on Sunday against Vitesse, the American was also allowed to fill in for coach Arne Slott.
Fortuna Sittard started the season with a narrow defeat to national champion Ajax (2-3). FC Limburg consolidated itself this summer with Burak Yilmaz, Dogan Erdogan and Inigo Cordoba, among others.
