Walking in the Ramon crater in the Israeli Negev desert, you feel that you have left this valley under the surface of the moon. Virtually no trace of human presence can be recognized in the inhospitable landscape. Endless horizons and drought feel hostile and martian. Even underground it appears to mimic the rust color of the red planet’s metallic. The Amadee-20 mission, organized by the Austrian Space Forum and the Israel Space Agency, requires an international team of six astronauts to survive October 4 to 31, isolated from the world. During that time, they will only be allowed out in spacesuits, they will be constantly photographed and they will do various experiments. In this way, they hope to simulate a Mars flight and investigate the problems astronauts face during this mission. A real manned Mars mission likely won’t be until the next decade.
