A British parliamentary researcher has been arrested in the UK on charges of spying for China. It’s about a man in his twenties. He was arrested with another man under the Official Secrets Act. This is what the British newspaper reported Sunday times This was confirmed by the police.
The parliamentary investigator is said to have been in contact with several Conservative MPs, including current Secretary of State for Security Tom Tugendhat and the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Alicia Cairns. Contacts with Tugendhat are said to date back to before his appointment as Minister of State.
The arrest actually took place on March 13, but has now been made public Sunday times. The man in his 20s was arrested in Edinburgh, and the man in his 30s was arrested in the Oxford area. The newspaper wrote that the younger of the two lived in China for a while.
Searches were carried out at the homes of the two men and at a third address in London. They are currently free on bail.
Last year, British intelligence warned that a Chinese agent – Christine Cheng-Kui Li – had infiltrated the British Parliament to interfere in British politics on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party.
