VideoRinus van Kalmthout will leave the front row at the Indy 500 next week. The Hoofddorp rider only had to make way for favorites Scott Dixon and Colton Hertha in the “Fast Nine” qualifiers.
As if that race day wasn’t pretty enough for the motorsports country of the Netherlands, Rinus van Calmuth has gone the extra mile in America. He set the front row as his goal up front and made it to qualify for the prestigious Indy 500 race. The young Dutchman (20) finished third in a row in the first row behind Scott Dixon (pole) and Colton Hertha.
Dixon was no match, the New Zealander grabbing his fourth place in the Indy 500. Behind six-time IndyCar series champion Herta van Calmuth also stayed on top, but Vichai qualified as the best Chevrolet driver. His teammate and team boss Ed Carpenter Racing of the same name will start fourth next week.
Van Calmuth will make his second appearance in Indy next Sunday. Last year he also made an impression when making his ‘Fast 9’ qualifying debut, with P4, but after those times were called off by rain and an unfortunate race, he ended up only 20th.
On Sunday, May 30th, he will have the opportunity to take revenge on the greatest classic car games in America. And that there’s nothing wrong with looks, Van Calmuth has already proven last week
With his first IndyCar win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The last (and only) Dutchman to win the Indy500? Van Calmouts mentor Ari Luyendyk, in 1990 and 1997.
