Photos: Lava flows from the infamous Congo volcano | abroad
Nyiragongo volcano, about 6 miles north of Goma, erupted on Saturday evening. Thousands of people saved. 5,000 to 7,000 people have taken refuge in neighboring Rwanda. Although it was not yet clear whether the situation had stabilized or not, the first people returned Sunday morning.
The lava flow did not reach the Goma airport or the city limits, but it did reach the surrounding villages. Several homes were destroyed. It is not clear how much damage the volcanic eruption did. It is also not known if there were any injuries or deaths. The panic can be seen in pictures of pedestrians on social media after the eruption.
Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and considered one of the most dangerous. The former volcano in 2002 in the Congo, Central Africa, killed more than 100 people and displaced 120,000 people. The deadliest explosion occurred in 1977, when more than 600 people were killed.
