Italy may receive immigrants in Albania from the Albanian court | outside
Italy may receive migrants rescued in Italian waters in Albania. The Albanian Constitutional Court ruled on Monday that the migration agreement between the two countries stipulated in the agreement is not unconstitutional.
The two countries plan to open two centers in northern Albania that can accommodate about three thousand migrants per month. These centers will be managed by Italy and fall under Italian jurisdiction, even though they are located on Albanian territory.
Human rights groups criticized the deal. For example, concerns have been expressed about the living conditions of migrants in the centres.
Albania's right-wing opposition claims national security is at risk. The agreement would undermine Albanian territorial integrity. But according to Interior Minister Taulant Bala, this is not the case. “It's like we're showing the land, like we do with embassies,” Bala said.
It is not clear exactly when the shelters will open, but initially it was planned for the beginning of this year. The number of migrants scheduled to be received is scheduled to rise from 3,000 later to about 36,000. While asylum seekers are staying in Albania, the Italian authorities are processing their applications.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said earlier that minors, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups would not be brought to Albania. Furthermore, few details were revealed when the deal was announced.
It is now up to the Albanian Parliament to ratify the agreement.
