Azerbaijan and Armenia exchange prisoners to repair tense relations | outside
Azerbaijan and Armenia exchanged prisoners on the border on Wednesday. This would be a sign that neighboring countries are trying to normalize their relations after years of mutual conflict.
In return, Azerbaijan released 32 Armenians. Most of them were arrested by the end of 2020. In return, Armenia released two Azerbaijani soldiers who had been detained since April.

The two countries have fought several wars over Nagorno-Karabakh in recent decades. This region officially belongs to Azerbaijan, but until recently was home to ethnic Armenians who were virtually autonomous.
In September, Azerbaijan invaded the region with a lightning attack. Almost all Armenians fled and the separatists unilaterally dissolved the declared republic. The Armenian government spoke of ethnic cleansing.
Last week, the two countries announced their intention to normalize relations. They hope to sign a peace agreement this year.
