Sof by Xandra Velzeboer in WB’s first short track| sports
Xandra Velzeboer got her short track World Cup season off to a smooth start in Montreal. She crashed in the 1000m final and missed the podium. Felzbauer was the grand champion last winter, winning four gold medals at the world championships in Seoul.
She easily qualified for the 1000m final, but something went wrong in the race. Velzeboer sat too far back and when she wanted to ski forward, she tapped an opponent’s ski and fell with three others.
American Kristin Santos Griswold was the only one to survive and easily skated to victory. Korean Lee So-yeon and her compatriot Seo Wei-min ranked second and third. Velzeboer finished a distant fourth.
Her sister, Michelle Felsbauer, played in the second division final and was awarded a penalty.
