Rescue teams are still searching for survivors of the Afghanistan earthquake outside
In Afghanistan, rescue workers are still searching for survivors under the rubble after the earthquake that occurred last Saturday. More than two thousand people were killed.
The earthquake occurred in western Afghanistan, near the city of Herat. Many houses have collapsed. Video footage shows that some villages have been completely destroyed.
Being a remote part of the country, it was difficult to reach the area quickly. But rescue teams have been working for a long time and still sometimes pull people out of the rubble. Neighboring countries Pakistan and Iran, among others, have already pledged assistance.
The 6.3 magnitude earthquake is one of the deadliest earthquakes this year. In addition to more than 2,000 dead, about 2,000 people were also injured, according to the Taliban, which controls power in Afghanistan.
Many women and children were injured
Two-thirds of those seriously injured are women and children. This was stated by employee Alaa Abu Zaid from the World Health Organization to the World News Agency ReutersThis was after a tour of various hospitals.
According to him, this is because the earthquake occurred at 11 am (local time). Several men were out of the house at the time. Women and children were in their homes, and many of them ended up under the rubble.
Abu Zeid also points out that it is important that funds remain available for humanitarian aid. Especially since there are other conflicts elsewhere in the world, such as in Ukraine, and more recently the fighting in Israel and in the Palestinian region.
In addition, health care in Afghanistan has had to make significant cuts recently, because the country is largely dependent on donor money from abroad. But since the Taliban seized power in the country in 2021, many countries have cut off aid.
