At least 872 migrants arrived in the UK in the past 24 hours by crossing the Channel from France. This is the highest daily number this year. Since the beginning of August, the record number has reached 756 migrants.
According to figures published by the British government on Sunday, the migrants arrived on fifteen different boats on Saturday. In total, nearly 21,000 people have reached the British coast this year. This is lower than in the same period last year, when the count was about 25,000 migrants. A total of 45,755 migrants arrived through the canal in 2022, according to official statistics.
Since 2018, the British government has been tracking the number of people who make the dangerous crossing. Since then, more than 100,000 people have been counted. The daily record so far was set on August 22, 2022, when 1,295 migrants set foot on the beach.
Dozens of others drowned while trying to cross the canal. In November 2021, another 27 migrants, including women and children, died, possibly after their boat was rammed by a larger ship. One of the world’s busiest shipping routes passes through the canal.
