Ekaterina Alexandrova extends the title of the Lipima Open: the Russian beats her compatriot in Rosmalin | sports
with a summaryEkaterina Alexandrova consolidated her title at the WTA Championships in Rosmalen. The Russian defeated her compatriot Veronika Kudrmitova in the final of the Lipima Open in three sets: 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (3-7).
The third-set tiebreaker had to finally decide the nerve-wracking match, which ultimately lasted more than three hours. This was largely due to the rain hitting the grassy track in Rosmalen. The match was stopped for more than half an hour after the first set due to rain. In the end, Alexandrova took over the party.
Alexandrova ended the tiebreaker after 2 hours and 52 minutes on her fourth match point. In the third set, Kudermetova cleared three match points on her own serve. Alexandrova appeared to have already used her third game point and celebrated winning the tournament. She threw her racket to the grass out of joy, but Kudermetova demanded challenge on me. Alexandrova’s ball turned outward, so it had to be played in. It turned out to be a tiebreaker and Alexandrova was clearly the best.
Alexandrova replied
“I was completely happy inside when I saw the last ball into the net,” said Alexandrova, who had not dropped a set on her way to the final. “I like the conditions here, although it wasn’t easy today with the interruptions.”
For Alexandrova, it was the fourth title of her career and the first of the season. The 28-year-old Russian won the WTA tournament in Rosmalen for the second time in a row. Last year, Alexandrova defeated Arina Sabalenka in straight sets.
