Venus Williams has left the press guessing about her future plans and motives for her return to Rosmalen. In a press conference that lasted only about 3 minutes, she gave only short answers.
“It’s so much fun” and “It’s the most beautiful game on earth,” the American replied to questions about what prompts her to return to the ring at the age of 42. She played her first match in almost half a year at Autotron. She lost in three sets to the only 17-year-old Celine Nayef from Switzerland.
When asked what the next few months will be like for her, Williams also responded defensively. “I’ll play next week. What will the next few months look like? I’ll play next week…”
However, Williams also showed that she enjoyed her first performance in the Netherlands. “It was beautiful and I love it here. The people are amazing and it was the best experience ever. I shouldn’t have waited so long to get here,” said the seven-times Grand Slam champion. “When I walked on the track I was laughing inside, it was the best feeling. And the grass was amazing.”
Williams described her sister Serena’s presence as “really special” and “very motivating”.
Venus Williams will enter the Birmingham Turf Championships next week with a wild card.
