Fourth round overviewIga Swiatek reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros without any problems. Ukraine’s Lesya Tsurenko succumbed to the world’s No. 1 Polish 5-1 in the first set.
The 34-year-old Tswerenko introduced a female doctor to the court after winning her first match 4-1 on a Swiatek serve. The number 66 in the world rankings was having difficulty breathing and was feeling dizzy. She tried again, but gave up one game later.
Swiatek could become the first player to win the Roland Garros tournament two years in a row since Justine Henin in 2007. The Pole has not yet dropped a set in this tournament and has not given Chinese Wang Xinyu a single match in the third round.
Jaborna
Anas Jaber and Coco Jove qualified for the quarter-finals earlier today. The Tunisian easily won 6-3, 6-1 over Bernarda Pera, and the American needed only two sets against Anna Schmidlova: 7-5, 6-2.
This is the first time that seventh-placed Jabeur has reached the quarter-finals in Paris. “Before I was in the fourth round twice, I failed to advance twice,” she said after the match. Jabeur was a losing finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2022.
Jabeur will face Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maya in the quarter-finals: the 14th seed in the world. Maya won in three sets against Spain’s Sarah Sorribes Tormo: 6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-5. The match lasted nearly 4 hours and was just short of the longest women’s match ever at Roland Garros.
Three in a row for Goff
Coco Gauff has reached the last eight for the third consecutive year. The American tennis star, the sixth seed, won in two sets over Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, 7-5, 6-2.
And the 19-year-old Gauff let Schmiedlova recover from trailing 5-2 in the first set. At five-and-five she’s still distancing herself. In the second set, Gauff was no longer in trouble.
The talented teenager will compete against Swiatek in the quarter-finals. The Pole and Gauff faced each other in last year’s Roland Garros final. Swiatek won easily 6-1, 6-3. Swiatek could become the first player to win Roland Garros two years in a row since Justine Henin in 2007.
Casper Road
Casper Rudd advanced to the quarterfinals in the men’s tournament. The Norwegian, world No. 4, is settled in three groups with Nicolas Jarry of Chile who is ranked 35th in the world rankings. It became 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-5 for Rudd.
The Norwegian, who lost the final to Rafael Nadal last year, will face Holger Rohn in the quarter-finals. The sixth-place Dane had a hard time with Argentine Francisco Sirondolo, but eventually won. In a 4-hour match, Ron made the difference in the superbreak of the fifth set: 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(7).
Rudd and Ron also faced each other in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros last year. Rudd then prevailed in four sets. This will be the sixth meeting between 24-year-old Rod and 20-year-old Ron. Rudd has been the best four times from the previous five meetings. Ron’s only meeting this year resulted in his victory in the semi-finals of the Rome Masters.
Alexander Zverev reached the quarterfinals without any problems. The former US Open finalist, seeded 22nd, had no problem defeating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-1 6-4 6-3.
Middlekop beats Roger
Matoi Middelkoop and partner Germany’s Andreas Mies took out defending champions Jean-Julien Roger and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador in doubles at Roland Garros. The Dutch-German pair won the quarterfinals in Paris in two sets: 7-6 (6) 6-1.
For Middelkoop, this is the second time he has reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros in doubles. Last year he did it with Rohan Bhopana from India. The duo then lost to Roger and Arevalo.
In the semi-finals, Middelkoop and 12th-placed Mies will compete against the Belgians Sander Gilles and Joran Vliegen.
Demi Shores
Demi Schors, along with her American doubles partner Desirae Krawczyk, failed to reach the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. Schurz and Krawzik, the fifth seeds, lost in the round of 16 to Su Wei-hsieh of Taiwan and China’s Xinyu Wang, who won the match 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Schurz never got past the third round at Roland Garros. She has reached at least the quarter-finals in the other three Grand Slam tournaments.
Schurz (29) was the only Dutch tennis player in women’s doubles in Paris.
