The Italian sports newspaper, La Gazzetta dello Sport, said today that Sony Colbrelli will soon announce his retirement as a cyclist. The 32-year-old Italian collapsed in March after the opening stage of the Tour of Catalonia ended: Colbrelli appeared to have an arrhythmia.

Rescuers were able to bring Colbrelli back to consciousness with the help of chest compressions and a defibrillator. The Italian was then taken to a hospital in Girona, where several investigations were conducted to find the cause of his irregular heartbeat. The European champion of Trento eventually underwent a successful operation in his native Italy where a defibrillator was implanted under the skin.

Colbrilli himself still had good hopes that he would be able to return to the peloton, but in his homeland excellent sports with a defibrillator are forbidden. Colbrelli’s story reminds us of that of Christian Eriksen. The Danish footballer suffered a heart attack at the last European Championship and had to leave his Italian club Inter Milan after undergoing a subcutaneous defibrillator implant.

Thus Eriksen returned to Great Britain, signed a contract with Premier League club Brentford and now plays for Manchester United. Colbrelli has been in contact with Eriksen in recent months, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, but – unlike the Dane – he will not return to his sport. In cycling, you race under a license from your country, in the case of Colbrelli Italy.

Colbrelli was still investigating the possibility of racing under the Swiss flag in the future, as he resides in Switzerland, but the UCI is said to have banned it. The classic strong runner knight also wouldn’t want to take unnecessary risks to his family, and so he’ll say his farewell soon. On November 15, his team will hold a farewell press conference Bahrain victorious.

Colbrelli scored 34 victories in his professional career. The Italian achieved the biggest victory of his ‘miracle year’ 2021: the best in the fall champion’s edition of Paris-Roubaix. Colbrelli also claimed the European title in his home country (Trento) that year, was crowned national champion and was the best on the Benelux tour. His honor list also includes victories at Brabantse Pijl, Tre Valli Varesine, Gran Piemonte, Coppa Bernocchi and Coppa Sabatini.
