Golfers competing in the controversial LIV Golf International Series are demanding readmission to the DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour. Organizers of that tour announced last week that golfers who play in the LIV tournaments will be fined £100,000 and suspended from three world rounds, including the Scottish Open.
According to The Telegraph, 16 golfers, including England’s Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter, have requested in a letter that the penalties be rescinded. They want to participate in the Scottish Open next week.
“Instead of spending our time, energy and financial resources on lawsuits and appeals, we ask that you reconsider the recent fines and penalties I have imposed on you,” the letter read. Golfers were issued an ultimatum through the end of Friday afternoon. They still threaten lawsuits if they don’t get what they want. “If nothing changes, it will leave us no choice but to use the various methods available to correct these errors.”
Several top golfers have made the move to the new LIV Series, a lucrative series of tournaments funded by investors from Saudi Arabia. The US PGA Tour organization decided at the beginning of last month to suspend all “dissidents”. A week ago, the DP World Tour, which featured Dutch golfers Just Luiten, Will Besling, Darius van Driel and Dan Huizing, was also sanctioned.
