Sydney McLaughlin, 22, broke her own world record in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday. During the American Championships in Eugene (Oregon), where the world championships will also be held next month, she raced to a time of 51.41, five hundredths faster than the 51.45 with which she became Olympic champion in Tokyo last year.
McLaughlin took the lead early in the final and didn’t give a chance to the rest of the field. With this victory, she secured her participation in the World Championship. ‘I knew anything was possible,’ she said after her race. Bretton Wilson finished second with a time of 1.67 seconds, while Shamir Little was third with a time of 53.92 seconds.
“We’re going to represent the United States really well, we’re all going to try to get on the podium,” McLaughlin said.
Dutchman Vimke Paul, who won bronze in Tokyo, is also an important contender for the American in the 400-meter hurdles. It has the fastest time of 52.03.
