This was Orange’s third match in the New Country competition and the first with interim national coach Jamilon Mulders on the bench. The German is the interim successor to departing Allison Annan. The Dutch team won the two matches against Belgium last fall.
Mulders’ team was missing Phyllis Albers. Earlier this week, she broke her left thumb in a fall while training.
Pro League is a country specific tournament created in 2019. Nine countries play against each other multiple times. Orange is my favorite for this title. The Netherlands is currently in the lead with three wins from the same number of duels, but that doesn’t mean much at this point. For example, there are also countries that have not played a single match yet.
The last time the Netherlands and Spain met at the European Championships last year was in Amstelveen. Then the orange won 7-1. Today was not that easy. Holland suffered during the match. The goal came in the 42nd minute. Matla took advantage of a cross from Marlos Kittels from close range. The striker scored her 65th international goal.
Matla was less happy on penalties. Orange had six, but none led to success.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 4.30 pm in Valencia.
Jeroen Delmy, the Dutch hockey player’s national coach, has hired Eric Verbaum as an assistant. Verboom, 52, will for the time being combine his work with being a coach with the Den Bosch men. After this season, he will be working full time with the Orange team, including at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
Hockey players prepare for four matches in the Pro League in South Africa. On February 8 and 12, South Africa will be the opponent, and on February 9 and 13 the Delmee team will meet France.
Delmee has selected 22 players for the trip to South Africa, where the Orange team is now training. Gil Galema van Oranje-Rud has not traveled due to the injury and is working on his recovery in the Netherlands.
