Mont Blanc shrank by about a meter | Abroad
Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, shrank by about one meter compared to the previous measurement in 2017. The “ceiling of Europe” in the Alps is now 4807.81 metres. In 2017 that was 4808.72 metres.
About thirty researchers climbed the mountain in the middle of this month to take the measurements. It is difficult to measure due to the thick layer of eternal snow, which is calculated in the measurements. This glacier layer of snow lasts all year round. The thickness of this layer fluctuates, so that the height of Mont Blanc also continues to fluctuate. According to measurements, the height of the rock under the ice is 4792 meters.
The researchers make their measurements available to other scientists and invite them to explain the height differences more precisely. In the previous measurement four years ago, the top shrank by about an inch, compared to a 2015 study.
