Lucasfilm hires YouTuber who improved on deepfakes for ‘The Mandalorian’

Deepfakes are both fascinating and problematic, but especially good deepfakes have their origins in a A strong blow to the job Delivered.

Lucasfilm hired a YouTuber who cemented one of the most epic moments in season two of The Mandalorian. In the shot, the studio spent a significant portion of its budget, Mark Hamill in order to appear again like everyone else. (My) favorite Jedi of all time: Luke Skywalker.

After his surprise appearance (and eventually saving Grogu) from a Jedi master, YouTube creator Shamook creates a deepfake of Skywalker using the same scenes. It was incredibly convincing and surpassed the CGI seen in the actual episode. The UK-based YouTuber has been creating deepfake related videos since 2018 and will now work at Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm’s visual effects division.
