Kevin Schwantz

500cc legend Kevin Schwantz to Classic GP Assen

Thirty years after his third and final TT victory at Assen, motorsports legend Kevin Schwantz is back in Drenthe. The Texan is a special guest during the Grand Prix Classic on the TT circuit, September 8-10.

‘Revvin’ Kevin is competing for both the Pepsi Suzuki RGV 500 and Lucky Strike Suzuki RGV 500. The Classic GP organization announced this today. “What Valentino Rossi meant to fans at Assen in the last decade, Kevin Schwantz meant to him in the early ’90s.”

The Schwantz wins in Assen, in 1993, in which he narrowly beat Mick Doohan in the final, was not his last TT. He was also first in 1994, but the American – who, thanks to his only world title in the previous year, raced not with his 34 but with a score of 1 – finished fifth. The win during Schwantz’s last TT race went to the man who finished second at Assen a year ago: Mick Doohan.

After his retirement he was called a “MotoGP Legend”. In 2019, he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Visitors to the Grand Prix Classic have the chance to meet the former World Champion. But these visitors must purchase an entry ticket for the event, which is being held for the second time, before January 1. An event where classic motorcycles and cars from days gone by compete with each other and entertain the public during demonstrations.
