The Australian Open is just a couple of weeks away, so for Flashback Friday this week, we’re looking at the last time an Aussie defeated a foreigner in final of the year’s first Grand Slam event.

The moustachioed and mulleted Sydney superstar John Newcombe took on American top seed and World No.1 Jimmy Connors in the 1975 final, prevailing 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

It was the legendary Newcombe’s second Australian Open triumph, after winning previously in 1973, and was to be the last of his seven Grand Slam titles. He went down to compatriot Mark Edmondson in the 1976 final – the last time an Australian won the event.
