If the early rounds of the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast are anything to judge by, we look to be in for a year of incredible surfing in 2013.
A majority of the top seeded surfers made it through their heats today, with the major upset being Dusty Payne knocking Owen Wright out of the event in their Round 2 match-up.
After being injured for long periods last year, Payne looks to be fit and hungry for success. Payne said. “I’m healthy now though and I’ve put in a lot of work to get some confidence back in my surfing. It’s not easy having a low seed on tour because you draw the toughest guys. A win against Owen (Wright) is a good start.”
Taj Burrow, Jeremy Flores & Michel Bourez all made it through their respective Round 3 heats this afternoon.
The final heat of the day included a third round duel between current world champion Joel Parkinson and the innovated Dane Reynolds. Reynolds, a wild card in the event, looked dangerous with his lethal carving and aerial attack while Parkinson looked un-flustered at his home break refusing to panic. Parkinson nailed a 9.87 during the heat, which closed the door on Reynolds progression.
Call for the Pro 7.30am tomorrow morning local time.
