Injured Parkinson to miss Vans World Cup

Australian superstar Joel Parkinson has been ruled out of the Vans World Cup of Surfing after sustaining an injury while free-surfing at Pipeline.

Parkinson received nasty back lacerations from a reef; he was treated onsite by medical staff, before being sent to hospital for precautionary X-rays.

The Gold Coast product’s injury setback is a blow to his Billabong Pipe Master prospects. He will be replaced at Sunset but compatriot Yadin Nicol.

Parkinson should be right for the Pipe Masters, the third and final event of the Triple Crown of Surfing and the last WCT event of 2014, beginning on December 8.
