Woody’s Weekly Scoop: January 31

Each week there are countless sporting videos, photos, GIFs, memes, highlights and lowlights that make you laugh and cry; it can be difficult to catch them all. My job is to bring you some of the more entertaining sporting moments, past and present, that I’ve stumbled across in the last week.

Enjoy!

SUPER BOWL SUPER BOWL SUPER BOWL SUPER BOWL SUPER BOWL

SUPER BOWL, BABY! That’s right, the biggest sporting event in America is just days away. The number one offense (Denver Broncos) versus the number one defense (Seattle Seahawks). The website is LOADED with Super Bowl articles and statistics so I won’t harp on about it, but make sure you watch! We are in for a treat.

With the Super Bowl comes Super Bowl ads. Arnold Schwarzenegger has teamed up with Bud Light for a Ping-Pong commercial.

Then Arnie’s new character (Howard) was used to promote health and fitness and raise money for after-school programs. It’s hilarious.

Australian Open – Bloopers

For those out there who didn’t catch the Australian Open, you really missed out. You missed a 28-year-old Swiss catch fire and unleash on the World’s greatest players. Stanislas Wawrinka, or Stan the Man, dispatched of Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller to reach the semi-finals, where he easily took down seventh seed Tomas Berdych, before beating world number one Rafael Nadal to claim his first ever Grand Slam title. Wawrinka has been living in the shadow of fellow Swiss legend Roger Federer, as he won 17 majors and cemented his place on Tennis’ Mouth Rushmore. But as Federer drops to his lowest ranking in over a decade (8th), the media in Switzerland presented Stan the Man with a 14-page spread and renamed the village of Saint-Barthelemy to Stan-Barthelemy in honour of the victory.

If you only watch a few seconds, you cannot miss the ball boy making a rough ball to the face – like a man!

Kevin Durant vs. LeBron James: Rucker Park Style

Yesterday the two best players in the NBA went head-to-head – and it was epic. Kevin Durant and his Thunder were down 18-points halfway through the first quarter, but KD extended his epic streak of twelve games with 30 or more points to down Miami 112-95. With this run Durant continues to climb the list of longest 30+ point streak. Durant currently sits at third on the historic list. The next player he can pass is T-Mac (Tracy McGrady), who had 14 games at the age of 23 in the 2002-2003 season. But topping T-Mac’s effort was Kobe Black Mamba Bryant. From January 29 to February 28 in 2003, Kobe strung together 16 consecutive games of 30 or more points – that’s not the impressive part. Throughout this streak Bryant had nine consecutive 40+ games; he averaged 40.4 points per game during these 16 games.

The best element of this matchup was their crazy duel to end the third quarter. Both player lit up and had 12 points in the quarter – well, most of these points came when they combined for 14 points in the last two and a half minutes.

Thiago Alcantara

A few days back in the German Bundesliga, Bayern Munich came from behind to beat Stuttgart to go 13 points clear. Thiago signed from Barcelona in the summer and in the third minute of stoppage time produced this stunner!

Australian Cricket

Michael Clarke and his men have embarrassed English cricket team this summer – and it needed to happen. After our horrific Ashes tour mid last year, the Australian public wanted answers and results, and they got them. It’s difficult against talent like this.

James Faulkner did his best Michael Bevan impersonation, as Australia needed 25 runs off 12 balls at the Gabba. Somehow in the second half over he smashed Ben Stokes for 13, leaving a target of 12 in the final six balls. Oh yeah, he got it.

When you field this, no team stands a chance.

Carmelo Anthony – Scores MSG Record 62-points

The Knicks are having a poor season, but Carmelo Anthony has been putting in the work. Melo went off against the Bobcats: 62-points, 23/35 FGS, 13 rebounds, 6/11 from downtown, all in 39 minutes.

It was just days earlier that Melo was travelling.

Laird Hamilton – Stack at Jaws

Arguably the greatest big wave surfer of all time who pioneered two-in surfing, Laird Hamilton, and a few friends were crazy enough to take on the big swell at Jaw last week. Even the best stuff up sometimes.

NFL – Bad Lip Reading

The guys at Bad Lip Reading have outdone themselves again with another awesome clip from the NFL season. This year’s one features Peyton Manning, Jim Harbaugh and Philip Rivers.

Michelle Obama Dunk LeBron

The Miami Heat visited the White House and First Lady Michelle Obama took part in some photo bombs and a dunk.
