Childress gets one game, $7,500 fine

The NBL tribunal verdict is in after Sydney Kings’ import Josh Childress’ sickening elbow on Perth Wildcat Jesse Wagstaff. The American will miss just one game for the cowardly act that shocked the league, but he was heavily fined.

Childress pleaded guilty to the charges of unduly rough play and bringing the game into disrepute, but managed to get off the serious striking with an elbow charge due to inconclusive reports.

He will miss the Kings’ next game against Cairns Taipans, while he carry a one-game suspended sentence with him through till the end of the 2014-15 season, to be enforced if he reoffends.

Childress, who has had stints with NBA franchises Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, Brooklyn Nets and New Orleans Pelicans, was slugged with a total of $7,500 in fines. He publicly apologised and expressed remorse for the ugly incident.

On top of Childress’ fine and suspension, he has now become the victim of racial abuse. There’s no argument his act was unprofessional and disgraceful – his punishment is quite lenient – but the action of this Twitter user are downright pathetic, born out of ignorance and stupity.
