MESSI RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL DUTY AFTER PENALTY MISS

Widely regarded as the greatest player of his generation, Lionel Messi’s international career came to an inglorious end after shanking a penalty attempt in Argentina’s shootout loss to Chile in the Copa America final.

The Barcelona megastar, who boasts 55 goals in 113 international appearances since 2005, announced his retirement from the arena following the bitter defeat.

Argentina’s best player since Diego Maradona, Messi’s international career will ultimately be remembered for failing to get his country over the line in big finals, finishing on the losing side in the 2014 World Cup final and the 2007 and 2015-16 Copa America deciders.

Meanwhile, his mind-boggling miss over the cross-bar will go down as Messi’s ‘David Beckham 2004 Euros’ moment.
