Following Bayern Munich’s triumph over German rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night, the football season is now officially over. Well, it would be if a few clubs hadn’t come up with this ridiculous notion of ‘post-season’ tours in addition to some Mickey Mouse international friendlies. However, although there is no football of any note on, there is still plenty to talk about, with the transfer rumour mill progressing into overdrive.
One of the unique things about summer 2013 is that Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will all be under new management next season, which means that there’s a whole lot of uncertainty regarding which players the new managers will keep and which players they will want to bring in. There’s been some pretty juicy transfer gossip already, so if you want to know about some of the rumours regarding who’s going where, this is the page for you. We’re going to keep this page updated throughout the footballing drought, so when you’re mourning the end of the season, the rumour mill can satiate your desire for some football related news.
Bale to Real
One imagines that this one will run and run (and run and run and run – all summer). Gareth Bale has been outstanding this season, and the tabloids and broadsheets are falling over themselves to tell us that Real Madrid are willing to shell out £65 million to bring the Welshman to the Bernabeu.
Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett was reportedly questioned on the prospect of the goalscoring playmaker heading to Spain and his response was to indicate that they would be prepared to listen to an offer from Real; although he was quick to make it clear that Bale had three years remaining on his contract and that he currently didn’t have permission to speak to any clubs about a possible sale. The gossip doing the rounds is that Madrid have set a June 15th deadline for any possible Bale business to be carried out, but given Daniel Levy’s penchant for getting a good deal, I can’t see this saga being over any time soon.
Villa & Damiao to Spurs
There’s no doubt that Tottenham fans will want to keep hold of Bale, but were they to lose their most potent attacking threat they would perhaps feel slightly better if this next rumour was to come to fruition. Several newspapers are reporting that Spurs are close to signing both David Villa and Leandro Damiao.
Villa has not been getting many games for Barcelona, and at 31 years old there’s no doubt that he’d like to play more football with his career coming to an end. Villa’s skill and finishing ability should not be marginalised, and he would certainly liven up a Tottenham attack to relied almost solely upon Gareth Bale to win them games last season.
Damiao is at the other end of the spectrum, a 23 year old young buck who has been performing well for Brazilian side Internacional for quite a while. He can play as a traditional number 9, and the speculation is that Villas-Boas would like to play both strikers together, with Villa playing off the big Brazilian.
Given to Hull
If you’ve been watching the Premier League for quite a while then no doubt you’ll be aware of Shay Given. An ever present in a Newcastle side for several years, Given was quite rightly regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the league. 2009 saw a big money move to Man City, but a year and a half later he was suddenly dropped to the bench in favour of Joe Hart. The Irishman failed to win his place back and a year later moved on to Aston Villa, and after a year in the No.1 jersey, poor performances lost Given his place, and it was back to benchwarming for the man from Lifford.
Given has never made any secret of the fact that he is not satisfied with merely sitting on the bench and picking up a paycheck, and with the speculation that Steve Bruce is interested in making Given his new No.1 at Hull, it wouldn’t surprise many to see him make that switch.
Jovetic to Arsenal or Chelsea
Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic has long been mooted as a potential Arsenal player, and up until this week, all evidence pointed towards Arsene Wenger bringing him to the Emirates this summer. Whilst there is still potential for Jovetic to move to the red half of North London, it appears that Chelsea have joined the race for the Montenegrin international. Given that they don’t currently have a manager, it appears likely that chairman Abramovich is the one behind this, but nevertheless Chelsea’s interest is bad news for Arsenal who probably can’t hope to offer the same transfer fee or wages that the Russian billionaire can.
Lewandowski to Bayern
Following his sterling performances for Dortmund this year, Robert Lewandowski is this summer’s hot property, and he has been linked with a number of clubs, including Premier League champions Man Utd. However, it seems likely that the striker will move within Germany, with Bayern reportedly very interested in acquiring his signature. It remains to be seen whether Dortmund would be prepared to sell to their main rival, so this one is far from a done deal.
And some other rumours:
– Malaga’s Isco to Man City, Tottenham or Chelsea
– Lyon’s Grenier to Arsenal
– Chelsea’s Malouda to Lyon
– Real Betis’ Pozuelo to Swansea
– Athletico Madrid’s Falcao to Monaco
