THE DOWN UNDER REPORT: FOOTBALL

Commentary Box Sports brings you a wrap of last week’s action involving Aussies and Kiwis playing over in Europe.

Socceroos shot-stopper Mathew Ryan, who hasn’t featured often for Valencia this season, was promoted to a bench spot for the club’s 2-1 Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) loss to Celta De Vigo.

Fellow keeper Brad Jones played the full match as his ladder-leading Feyenoord Rotterdam team won 2-0 over Roda JC.

Huddersfield suffered a 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday, with former Melbourne City star Aaron Mooy playing a full match for the losing side, while Mile Jedinak (Aston Villa) and Bailey Wright (Bristol City) both started and played through narrow losses.

Up in the Premier League, Penrith’s Brad Smith and Nowra-born Adam Federici sat on the bench for Bournemouth as they went down 3-1 to Hull City.

Lanky Kiwi forward Chris Wood just can’t stop scoring for Leeds, heading home the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Derby County, which lifts them to third on the Championship ladder.

Over in the Scottish Championship, Gold Coast 21-year-old Lyndon Dykes came off the bench to play the final few minutes as his Queen of the South club drew 3-3 with Dundee United.
