Reality Cech for Arsenal in dismal EPL start

The Community Shield title Arsenal won last week seemed a distant, fading memory as the Gunners crashed and burned at home to a 0-2 defeat against West Ham United in their opening Premier League game.

Arsenal have been widely tipped to make a serious bid for the title for the first time in at least seven years, not least because of their acquisition of Petr Cech from Chelsea, arguably their most formidable goalkeeper since Jens Lehmann retired in 2008.

However, the inconsistency tag that is pinned on most Arsenal keepers seemed to find its way to the usually reliable Cech in his first League game as a Gunner, fumbling at a routine catch from a free kick on the stroke of half-time, enabling Cheikhou Kouyate to slot the ball into an empty net.

Mauro Zarate got the second in the 58th minute to seal an uninspiring performance by the home side, and Arsenal will need to improve massively – and rapidly – to be considered title contenders for much longer this season.
