The big Belgian striker is arguably the club’s highest-profile acquisition so far this summer, completed after Liverpool activated his release clause of £32.5 million. He scored 49 goals for Aston Villa in 101 games, and was at one point the highest scorer in a calendar year in the Premier League, ahead of the likes of Sergio Aguero and Robin van Persie.
It is Liverpool’s second-most expensive signing, after Andy Carroll signed from West Ham for a record £35 million in January 2011. Carroll was widely regarded as having failed to live up to his price tag.
Benteke joins Danny Ings as the other forward arriving in Merseyside since the end of the season, while Raheem Sterling recently departed to Manchester City for an English record £49 million.
