Clutch Benteke penalty revives Villa

Christian Benteke’s ice-cool penalty has snapped Aston Villa’s seven-match losing run and given the Villains hope of Premier League survival.

Benteke punished Ben Foster’s rash stoppage-time foul by outwitting the West Brom ‘keeper from the spot and snatching the Midlands Derby for Tim Sherwood’s side.

The match seemed destined for a draw when Baggies striker Saido Berahino cancelled out Gabby Agbonlahor’s well-taken opener, but Benteke stepped up and sent Villa three points clear of the relegation zone.

“Even when you play good and you don’t score you feel like you didn’t really do your job,” Benteke told AVTV after the match.

“Tonight I feel like I did my job.”

Elsewhere, Hull drew 1-1 with Sunderland while Southampton edged out Crystal Palace 1-0.
