Jose Mourinho has crafted a major off-field victory over former mentor Louis van Gaal, beating the Dutchman to the signature of Barcelona striker Pedro Rodriguez for a fee of £21 million.
For the best part of the summer, Pedro had looked to be heading for the red half of Manchester, but it is reported a personal phone call from the Chelsea boss managed to prise him from right under United’s nose.

It is likely to be a source of immense frustration at Old Trafford, with the centre-forward position under intense scrutiny during a summer that has seen Falcao, van Persie and Angel di Maria all pack up and head away from the Theatre of Dreams. Rooney’s indifferent form in the early part of the season has done little to allay concerns of the gaping hole up front.
With the situation around goalkeeper David de Gea no closer to being resolved, the revolving door at Manchester United looks set to be kept busy. How well United can police the entrants and departures may well determine where they finish this season.
