Dutch referee breaks player’s nose

Referees rarely endear themselves to footballers but this took those strained relations to a whole new level.

In a Dutch amateur league match, Barendrecht’s Mitchell van Gastel had his nose broken – not by an aggressive opponent, but by the swinging arm of referee Wim Bronsvoort.

Bronsvoort was waving away claims for a free-kick when van Gastel ran through his path, leaving the player needing medical attention and a stretcher.

No word on whether Bronsvoort was later celebrated by his fellow match officials for getting one back on the opposition.
