As Commentary Box Sports prepares to hang up the boots at the end of the week, we take a look back at 10 of our most memorable pieces from more than five years of bringing you quality sports news and opinion from Australia and around the world.
CBS TOP 10: OUR FAVOURITE ARTICLES
We took a trip down memory lane on a daily basis at Commentary Box Sports, celebrating our favourite moments from the past across all codes. But rarely was it more enjoyable than when our rugby league team selected their standout premiership match from the 1990s.
Veteran Daily Telegraph scribe Dean Ritchie got more than he bargained for when he took an ill-conceived, uninformed swipe at the Kiwis’ haka after the 2017 Anzac Test. Commentary Box Sports editor Will Evans went to town on ‘Bulldog’ in one of our most universally-applauded articles.
TV presenter Dave McLenaghan spent a brief but memorable stint at Commentary Box Sports during the 2016/17 summer, producing a series of fascinating Q&A pieces – including Olympic swimmer Tessa Wallace’s tough journey.
Andrew Ferguson was best known at Commentary Box Sports for his meticulously-researched historical pieces and number-crunching ‘Stats Amazing!’ Column, but he was never afraid to go a hundred miles an hour at the game’s issues. Andrew’s thoughtful article on the fractious relationship between players and media typified his opinion pieces.
Few rugby league writers pack more of an incisive punch than ‘Making The Nut’ cult hero Nick Tedeschi, who joined Commentary Box Sports for the last two seasons and routinely tore his deserving subjects to shreds.
Ryan Frisby came on board as our rugby union expert for our last two seasons are sparked debate of a regular basis. His piece on the worst All Blacks XV of the modern era got a massive reaction – and even led to copycat articles on other sites.
Brayden Issa only came on board with Commentary Box Sports midway through 2017, but he made a massive impact with our NRL, NBA and EPL audiences, and was easily our most prolific contributor during our last year in operation. Few writers pick apart rugby league in as much detail and with such a technical understanding – make sure you keep following this guy.
Will Evans’ ‘Sounding the Siren’ series featured in-depth profiles representative stars of the past such as Kerrod Walters, Chris Flannery, Manu Vatuvei and Kevin Campion, but our favourite remains the original – former Broncos winger Denan Kemp, whose NRL flame burnt out as quickly as it ignited before embarking on a staggeringly successful DIY media career.
Corey Rosser provided Commentary Box Sports with many, many outstanding interview-based NRL pieces, as well as expert A-League and NFL analysis, but few of his articles garnered more attention than this one:
We’ve always been proud of our commitment to covering surfing at Commentary Box Sports – for a general sports website in Australia, we believe we have led the way. Having respected surfing writer Jaymie Faber on board for 2016 and ’17 was a big part of our surfing coverage.
