Wellington lock's blatant shoulder charge

Shoulder charges don’t come much more blatant than this – and bruising Wellington lock Vaea Fifita couldn’t even use the excuse NRL players have of the ban on the tackle being relatively new!

Fifita lined up Hawke’s Bay No.8 Gareth Evans and deliberately smashed him with an illegal hit, breaking his rival’s collar-bone and earning himself a yellow card.

The Lions led 9-7 in their Ranfurly Shield challenge when the incident occurred just before halftime, but Fifita’s indiscretion provided the Bay with the impetus to go on with their defence of the treasured domestic prize, running away with the match 36-14.

Hawke’s Bay hosts Southland next Saturday in the last Shield challenge of the season.
