THROWBACK THURSDAY: REDS’ 2011 TRIUMPH

The Queensland Reds are hopeful their aggressive recruitment drive ahead of this season will help reclaim the glory days of 2011, which is the subject of this week’s Throwback Thursday.

The Reds topped the Super 15 table that year, and eliminated the Waratahs and Blues in the finals to progress to a showdown with New Zealand’s top team the Crusaders.

A Suncorp Stadium sellout witnessed a seesawing classic in the decider, with Dan Carter scoring the only try of the first half to provide the visitors with a 7-6 lead at halftime.

A pair of Carter penalties either side of a sizzling try to Reds winger Digby Ioane set up a 13-all stalemate, before the decisive moment of the final came in the 68th minute.

From a Crusaders turnover, Reds halfback and vice-captain Will Genia scored a mesmerising 60-metre solo try to the put the home side back in front, and the James Horwill-led side held on for an 18-13 triumph to become just the second Australian franchise (after the Brumbies) to lift the Super Rugby trophy.

Genia was named man-of-the-match, his title-winning try complemented by a superb all-round performance.
