Last week we brought you the incredible Wallabies-All Blacks clash at Stadium Australia in 2000, which New Zealand clinched via a late try to legendary winger Jonah Lomu.
This week’s Throwback Thursday features Australia’s maiden confrontation with a 20-year-old Lomu, who was fresh off a blistering campaign at the 1995 World Cup that had sent Rugby supporters everywhere into a frenzy.
Little more than a month after the tournament, Lomu singlehandedly destroyed the Wallabies in front of a packed house at the Sydney Football Stadium.
His barnstorming charges and offloads set up tries for fellow backline stars Frank Bunce, Andrew Mehrtens and Jeff Wilson, while he brushed off David Campese and Jason Little with alarming ease on the way to scoring a five-pointer of his own in a comprehensive 34-23 victory.
New Zealand Rugby followers may be worshipping ‘King Julian’ Savea these days, but there will only ever be one Jonah Lomu.
