The build-up to the inaugural Brisbane Global Tens this weekend has been somewhat overshadowed by the lack of All Blacks putting their hands up to take part at Suncorp Stadium.

But Kiwi stars weren’t always so reticent to have at bash in the abbreviated formats during the amateur days, as our Throwback Thursday to the 1990 Hong Kong Sevens final reveals.

The New Zealand side contained Test stars Zinzan Brooke, John Gallagher, Terry Wright, Graeme Bachop, John Schuster and future ABs – and renowned Sevens specialists – Eric Rush and Dallas Seymour.

The Fiji side had a couple of notables as well, including Sevens icon Waisale Serevi and future Canberra Raiders try-machine Noa Nadruku.

And it was the flamboyant islanders that proved to strong, overcoming an early 10-0 deficit to romp home 22-10 and claim their fifth Hong Kong Sevens crown.
