McKENZIE’S SOLO EFFORT SENDS TIMELY REMINDER

Most of the fullback hype in New Zealand rugby this season has been around whether Hurricanes sensation Jordie Barrett can supplant veteran stars Ben Smith and Israel Dagg as the first-choice No.15 options for the All Blacks.

But versatile Chiefs whiz Damian McKenzie sent a memo to selectors that he is still very much in the Test frame for next month’s Lions tour with a sparkling long-range try against the Sunwolves on Saturday.

In nine Super Rugby appearances this season, McKenzie has four tries, 53 points, three try assists, 136 carries, 17 clean breaks and a competition-high 903 running metres.

Barrett’s stats from eight rookie-season appearances are two tries, 51 points, three try-assists, 70 carries, eight clean breaks and 440 running metres.
